Coast Live Oak

When planting the Coast Live Oak, it is important to choose a location that meets its requirements for well-drained soil and full sun. Water the tree regularly, especially during the first year after planting, to encourage deep root growth and establish the tree. Once established, it can tolerate dry conditions and prefers dry summers. Do not plant Coast Live Oak in a lawn that will get weekly irrigation.

Allow the fallen oak leaves to remain in place on the ground as a mulch for your Coast Live Oak to retain moisture and provide necessary nutrients. Your Coast Live Oak does not require fertilizer. Fertilizing may encourage pest problems.

If you need to prune or shape your young oak tree, make small, minimal cuts and  prune only during dry weather. Hard pruning may make the Coast Live Oak susceptible to pests and disease. Mature oaks typically do not require pruning. 

The Coast Live Oak can tolerate a range of temperatures, but it's best to protect it from extreme cold below 15℉. Make sure the soil has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Support the tree with a stake if necessary, especially in the first years, to ensure it doesn't fall over.

A: Quercus agrifolia is fire resistant due to its evergreen leaves, thick bark, and ability to regenerate. The severity of damage to the tree depends on the age of the tree and the amount of shrub understory.
