Description

Provence Lavender is one of the most fragrant and beautiful lavenders that is sure to add a touch of elegance and charm to any garden.

Native to the Mediterranean region, Lavandula x intermedia 'Provence' is an evergreen, medium-small shrub known for its beautiful, fragrant light purple flowers on long stems that bloom summer through fall. The gray-green foliage is also fragrant and is green at first then ages to gray. A robust selection of Lavandin, Provence Lavender is known for its strong, distinctive scent, which is often used in aromatherapy and perfumery.

Provence Lavender is a prolific bloomer and robust shrub that is winter hardy to 15-20? and highly tolerant of heat, humidity, and nutrient-poor soil that performs well on hot, dry slopes or banks. Lavandula x intermedia 'Provence' is an excellent choice in a waterwise garden as an informal border, specimen plant, or in containers. Ideal in a formal or informal Mediterranean style landscape or herb garden. Provence Lavender is also the perfect plant for a pollinator garden. Plant in a location where one can easily brush against it to release its lavender aroma.

Provence Lavender is a favorite among gardeners for its fragrance, drought tolerance, and low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for beginners or busy gardeners.

Plant Care

To properly care for your Provence Lavender, it is important to provide it with full sun and well-draining soil. The plant prefers nutrient-poor, slightly alkaline soil that is loose and fast-draining. Avoid planting in heavy clay soils that do not drain fast enough and can become waterlogged. Plant your Provence Lavender slightly above the ground’s soil level to compensate for soil settling which may occur and to prevent rot by directing water flow away from the main stem.

Water regularly the first few weeks to help establish roots then reduce frequency and water as needed. Allow soil to dry in between waterings. Plants can become floppy and weak if overwatered. Best to water in the early morning and avoid watering overhead. Fertilizer is generally not needed.

Remove spent flowers to promote rebloom. In early spring or late summer after flowering, shear the plant about a third or half its size to maintain shape and size.

Recommended spacing if planting as a border is 18-24 inches apart.

Provence Lavender is perfect for adding fragrance and color to outdoor spaces. It is sure to make a beautiful addition to any garden.

FAQ's

Q: Is it ok to add mulch around my Provence Lavender?
A: Generally speaking mulch is used to retain moisture in the soil. For Lavender, use of a decorative rock mulch may be best as this will reflect light and heat resulting in more fragrant blooms. A wood mulch may hold too much moisture for your Lavender, especially if it is a heavy clay.

Q: When is the best time to harvest the lavender flowers?
A: The best time to pick flowers for sachets or seasoning is in the morning after dew has dried but before the heat draws out the essential oils. For best color, cut the stems when the buds are fully developed and 25%-50% are in bloom.
